Identifying Pipelines Near Your Farm or Ranch

If you have a pipeline right-of-way on or near your farm or ranch, it is important that you identify the exact location of the pipeline before chisel plowing, tilling, subsoiling, terracing, installing fence polls or initiating any type of deep excavation activity.

Pipeline markers are located along the pipeline right-of-way, at road and railroad crossings and at all above-ground facilities. Pipeline markers identify the general location of the pipeline, the specific products transported, the operator’s name and the emergency contact number. Pipeline markers do not identify the exact location of the pipeline, nor do they indicate the pipeline’s current depth.

In addition to pipeline markers provided by operators, the federal government offers access to maps that show the approximate location of transmission pipelines in your community. To view maps visit the online National Pipeline Mapping System.

To identify the exact location of pipelines and other underground utilities call 811 to contact your local One-Call Center

One-Call is a free service and may or may not require a pipeline representative to visit you at your farm or ranch. If a visit is required, someone from Explorer will contact you.
